Who Counts All of the Fabric?
Carole Fabrics carries over 10,000 fabrics with anywhere from 1 to 30 bolts of a single pattern on our shelves. With hundreds of thousands of yards of fabric we have in house, it's so important our systems are accurate. We have a ten day or less turn around on our fabricated product. So that means from the moment you get an order into our system, we need to have that product shipped out in ten days or less. If it's cut yardage, we ship it the same day if you ordered before 4pm EST. There may be exceptions but that is always the goal and we strive to reach it every day.
In order to meet that goal, we need to have fabric in stock to produce the orders. Even if our system is accurate, we still need to lay our eyes on the fabrics and count it periodically.
Who does that?
Well on a very early Saturday morning in Georgia, a team of 60+ employees gathered for a very important semi-annual event.
Inventory.
The word will send shivers down your spine. Although we tease and sometimes dread the thought of inventory, we all show up bright and early, eager to start and eager to finish. It's all hands on deck. Other than employees, the fabric we house is the most valuable asset to our company.
Having us count all the bolts of fabrics in the warehouse teaches everyone the importance of being accurate. It improves our accuracy of online inventory balances so our customers have up to date information and know what we have available for them.
Carole Fabrics has been around for over 60 years and inventory used to take several days, measuring with sticks and carving numbers on stone tablets. If you ask Wayne Bennett, one of our plant managers, a.k.a. Mr. Carole Fabrics, he's been around to see it progress over time. However now we are able to count all of it in one day, doesn't require us to shut down and is no inconvenience to our customers.
Thank goodness for technology.
Thank goodness for pizza (not pictured) supplied by Carole Fabrics.
Thank goodness inventory won't come around for another six months.
