How To Identify Safer Window Shades

November 6, 2024As you received your sample books for the Spring 2024 decorative fabric collection from Carole Fabrics, you may have noticed the addition of the PFAS-Free symbol shown here. But what does PFAS stand for and what does it mean to be PFAS‑free?
PFAS Explained
Per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of more than 4,700 synthetic chemicals that first came into common use in the 1950s. They share a similar molecular structure: a carbon chain and the element fluorine.
The appeal of these chemicals is their unique ability to repel both grease and water. They’re used not only for keeping household items clean and dry, but also in medical settings to prevent the spread of infection, to protect people as they’re exposed to extreme temperatures, as a barrier to UV rays, and even to preserve the integrity of bulletproof fabrics.
However, the carbon-fluorine bond is so strong that this group is sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals.” Experts believe that almost every PFAS ever made still exists. They have been found in water and food supplies all over the world, impacting the health and safety of both humans and wildlife. Health issues linked to PFAS include cancer, reduced immune response, and reproductive and hormonal disruptions.
Choosing PFAS-Free
The Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 fabric lines from Carole Fabrics are both fully PFAS‑free, as is the Park Lane Trimmings Collection. As we fabricate custom products, we use linings, thread and packaging that are free from PFAS. Our fabric treatments such as flame and soil resistance are supplied by a PFAS‑free facility.
When conducting a fabric search on Carolenet, you can select the PFAS‑Free attribute in the Specialty Fabrics section. That category will continue to grow as we add new collections and complete research on previously released products.
We’re making a conscious effort to source materials without PFAS so that you can create healthier and more sustainable environments for your clients. At Carole Fabrics, being PFAS-free means an extension of our promise to provide you with the finest custom soft window treatments in the industry.
